Fluency Managing Director, Gemma Smith, and R-Tech Materials Director of Composites Testing, Geraint Havard, have successfully completed their goal of cycling from London to Paris in time for JEC World 2022. The pair cycled a distance of 550km along rural lanes, towns, and motorways to reach France’s largest exhibition complex; Paris Nord Villepinte, in just 3 days!

The challenge has so far raised an incredible £9,559 from 132 supporters, including JEC, which graciously donated £5000 to the cause.

“Thank you for your initiative, continuous support and your enthusiasm to come to JEC World.” – JEC Group

The money raised will go to help the mental health charity, Mind—a service that has remained at the heart of this endeavour. For Gemma, the ride has been an emotional gratification.
“This bike ride has pushed our bodies and minds to the limit. We have not only succeeded in making it all the way to Paris, but we’ve accomplished our goal of raising an incredible amount of money for Mind. A big thank you to Geraint, our accompaniment in the support car, and everyone who donated and came out to support us.” – Gemma Smith, Fluency.

On completing the cycle, Geraint Havard said: “I may not be able to walk for the rest of the JEC convention, but I’m in high spirits and incredibly proud to have accomplished such a feat whilst raising money and awareness for such an important charity.”

Over the last two years, Mind has worked tirelessly throughout a difficult pandemic to offer support for millions of individuals struggling with mental health. In its last annual review, Mind’s workplace wellbeing programmes were accessed by over 1.57 million employees, while its online health information was accessed 20.7 million times. The funds Gemma and Geraint have made through their sponsorship will go to expanding Mind’s reach across the UK, supporting local groups and funding new campaign opportunities.

“Right now, my thoughts are with those who continue to struggle with their mental health,” said Gemma, “And with my loving friend—without her compassionate memory living on in my heart, I could never have achieved what myself and Geraint have with this great journey.”
